Job Summary
The Department of Fine & Performing Arts is seeking an tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Music. The successful candidate will also serve as Director of Choirs. Primary responsibilities include conducting the choir, recruiting music majors, and contributing to student retention. The choir director will conduct all chorus performances including those at major university functions such as Commencement, Charter Day, and Academic Recognition Convocation.
The choir director organizes and directs the annual spring tour, special performances on weekends, recording sessions, and guest appearances at churches and schools. Depending on the needs of the department and the skills of the candidate, responsibilities may include conducting and/or voice-related classes including Conducting Fundamentals, Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Choral Methods, Choral Lit. and Arranging, Diction for Singers, Vocal Pedagogy, Principal Applied lessons, Opera Workshop, etc.
The successful candidate must serve on committees, advise students, and hold office hours.
- Have earned Master of Music (M.M.) in Choral Conducting or Voice
- Evidence of a developing career as a choral canon as well a African-American choral and vocal traditions
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals and needs of diverse learners
- Commitment to teach basic musicianship skills in all courses and rehearsals
- Have earned Doctor of Musical Art (D.M.A.) in Choral Conducting
- Evidence of an extensive professional conducting career
- Teaching experience at the university level
- Knowledge of the choral cannon as well as African-American choral and vocal traditions
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals and needs of diverse learners
- Commitment to teach basic musicianship skills in all courses and rehearsals
