Assistant or Associate Professor/ Director of Choirs (Tenure-Track)

The Department of Fine & Performing Arts seeks a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Music who will also serve as Director of Choirs. Primary responsibilities include conducting the choir, recruiting music majors, and contributing to student retention. The choir director will conduct all chorus performances at major university functions including Commencement, Charter Day, and Academic Recognition Convocation, and will organize the annual spring tour, weekend performances, recording sessions, and guest appearances at churches and schools.

Responsibilities may also include conducting and/or voice-related classes such as Conducting Fundamentals, Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Choral Methods, Choral Literature and Arranging, Diction for Singers, Vocal Pedagogy, Principal Applied lessons, Opera Workshop, and related courses. The successful candidate must serve on committees, advise students, and hold office hours.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Have earned Master of Music (M.M.) in Choral Conducting or Voice
  • Evidence of a developing career as a choral conductor with knowledge of African-American choral and vocal traditions
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals and needs of diverse learners
  • Commitment to teach basic musicianship skills in all courses and rehearsals
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have earned Doctor of Musical Art (D.M.A.) in Choral Conducting
  • Evidence of an extensive professional conducting career
  • Teaching experience at the university level
  • Knowledge of the choral canon as well as African-American choral and vocal traditions
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals and needs of diverse learners
  • Commitment to teach basic musicianship skills in all courses and rehearsals

Budgeted Annual Salary:
Commensurate with experience
