Rail Engineer

Interstate Waste Services seeks a Rail Engineer to design, oversee, and optimize rail operations that move waste and recyclables safely and efficiently across the NY/NJ metro area. In this field-based role, you will plan rail routes, coordinate with transfer stations and third-party rail providers, and ensure track, loading, and unloading infrastructure meet operational and regulatory standards. You'll lead safety-focused projects, analyze performance data, support maintenance planning, and drive continuous improvements that enhance reliability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental stewardship in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and optimize rail operations for waste and recycling transport across the NY/NJ metro area.
• Coordinate rail movements with transfer stations, disposal sites, and third-party rail providers.
• Ensure rail infrastructure, loading, and unloading facilities meet safety and regulatory standards.
• Monitor rail performance metrics and analyze data to improve reliability and efficiency.
• Lead and support safety initiatives aligned with OSHA, FRA, and company standards.
• Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and logistics teams on rail-related projects.
• Develop and maintain rail operating procedures and technical documentation.
• Support maintenance planning and troubleshooting for rail infrastructure and equipment.
• Manage small to mid-size engineering projects from scope through implementation.
• Identify and implement cost-saving and sustainability improvements in rail operations.
