City of Fairlawn Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Firefighter / Paramedic for the Fairlawn Fire Department.

A non-refundable fee of $20.00 is required to take this examination, payable only in cash or money order (no personal checks) at the time the application is submitted. An exemption may be granted upon receipt of a notarized Poverty Affidavit from the test applicant.
Application ProcessApplications may be obtained at the City of Fairlawn Administrative Offices, 3487 S. Smith Road, Fairlawn, Ohio 44333, Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. Completed applications must be submitted no later than the examination date.
Examination ProcessCandidates who achieve a passing score on the written examination will be grouped into scoring "pods" based on examination performance and may advance to subsequent phases. Panel interviews will be conducted by a selection panel of Fairlawn Fire Department personnel. The panel will recommend to the Fire Chief. Final candidate selection shall be made following an administrative interview conducted by the Fire Administration.
WorkSchedule
- A 24-hour on / 48-hour off shift rotation
- A 40-hour work week as assigned by Fire Administration (variable between 07:00 – 19:00 except in cases of emergency or as agreed)
Assignments and schedules are subject to change in accordance with departmental staffing and operational requirements.
Compensation and BenefitsSalary and benefits shall be established in accordance with City of Fairlawn compensation schedules, collective bargaining agreements, and employment policies.
Starting Salary Range 2026:
- 0-1 Year - $69,884.07
- 1-2 Years - $78,623.23
- 2-3 Years - $83,056.20
- 3-4 Years - $87,496.47
- 4+ Years - $94,194.47
Eligible candidates from prior full-time municipal or township fire departments may be considered for up to four years of prior service credit on a case‑by‑case basis. Approved prior service credit may impact initial wage placement, vacation accrual rates, and transfer of eligible unused sick leave from prior employment.
