About the Position

A Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) is a federal law enforcement officer who protects U.S. borders, deters illicit activity, and facilitates legitimate trade and travel.

• Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations.
• Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
• Conduct inspections of individuals, conveyances, and goods.
• Determine admissibility of individuals entering the United States.
• Prevent illegal entry and smuggling of prohibited goods, including illegal drugs and other contraband.

Annual base salary ranges from $40,332 to $109,952 depending on grade and location, with an additional locality pay adjustment. Newly appointed officers may receive up to a $15,000 incentive per year for a three‑year (or four‑year for some locations) service contract in selected duty locations.

• GS‑5 – Minimum of 3 years full‑time general work experience or a bachelor’s degree or a combination of both.
• GS‑7 – Minimum of 1 year specialized full‑time work experience performing inspections, or a bachelor’s degree with a GPA ≥3.0 or one year graduate‑level education, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate education.
• Prior law enforcement or military law‑enforcement experience may qualify for GS‑9. Refer to the GS‑9 JOA on USAJOBS.
• U.S. citizen with at least three years of primary U.S. residency.
• Must be 40 years of age or younger by the date of selection (unless exempt by military or federal civilian law‑enforcement service).
• May be eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) if otherwise disqualified.

• Completed pre‑academy orientation (~2 weeks) at the home port and 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC.
• Completion of an online Spanish training program for southern border, Miami or Puerto Rico duty locations.
• Successful CBPO entrance examination.
