Job Summary

This role will perform laboratory activities and collaborate across functional groups to deliver high-quality data and documentation. This role will support the High Containment Chemistry division’s BRC Chemistry Operations functional group, specifically in chemistry and biochemistry activities, and will require working in dynamic environments. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for assisting senior staff and lead technicians with many aspects of the study, including benchwork, document preparation, laboratory cleaning and maintenance, and quality control/technical document reviews.

Study activities typically begin in early mornings and occasionally require weekend preparation.

Responsibilities
  • Perform basic chemistry and biochemistry laboratory procedures under the supervision of senior staff;
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including workbenches, equipment, glassware, pipettes, storage areas, and similar laboratory needs;
  • Dispose of chemical waste and hazardous materials according to safety protocols and regulations;
  • Operate and maintain MINICAMS air monitoring devices;
  • Operate and maintain GC and/or LC instrumentation;
  • Cleaning laboratory glassware following documented procedures;
  • Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies and reagents and assist in ordering and restocking as needed;
  • Support sample preparation activities, including labeling, sorting, and organizing samples for analysis;
  • Adhere to laboratory safety procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment;
  • Participate in safety training and contribute to maintaining a culture of safety within the laboratory;
  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including equipment maintenance logs and inventory records;
  • Serve as technical point of contact and/or lead technician for aspects of studies;
  • Performing other lab duties as needed.
Key Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in a laboratory science with at least 1 year of courses in chemistry and associated laboratories and 1 year of coursework in biology and associated laboratories;
  • 2+ years of experience with benchwork in a chemistry or biochemistry laboratory;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously work on multiple studies;
  • Excellent teamwork skills;
  • Must have experience working in chemical fume hoods and biological safety cabinets;
  • Must have experience working in a biosafety level-2 (BSL2),
    -3 (BSL3), and/or animal research environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection;
  • Must have experience with GLP documentation, QC review, or similar regulatory-compliance;
  • Must be a US Citizen to perform duties of this role;
  • Must be willing to be immunized with licensed and FDA-approved vaccines and medications recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents; and
  • Must be willing to participate in periodic drug screening.

Additional requirements may be requested at a future date:

  • Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain enrollment in a Chemical Personnel Reliability Program.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain CDC Select Agent Program approval.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Chemical Personnel Reliability Program;
  • Experience with gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry, dilutions, calibrations, FPD/FID;
  • Experience leading technical portions of studies;
  • Experience working in BSL-3 environments;
  • Experience working in high containment laboratories; and/or
  • Experience working with or in animal research facilities;
  • Post-high school degree or higher in animal science, biology, chemistry, or related field.
