Position: Phlebotomist - Part Time, Variable
Location: Logan

Phlebotomist

Collects and processes specimens for Laboratory analysis from hospital in-patients, out-patients, nursing homes, and at times patients' homes. The Phlebotomist reports to the HVCH Lab Director and maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients' families, medical staff, and interdepartmental and intradepartmental personnel.

Part Time Variable, 1st and 2nd shifts. 48-60 hours per pay Experience Preferred

Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or the equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy education program or equivalent clinical experience as medical assistant or related certification preferred.
  • Certification/Registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency preferred.
  • Preference given to individuals with one year experience in phlebotomy procedures.
  • Must have performed a minimum of 50 successful collections at a healthcare organization.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Empathy for the needs of patients.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Treats patients and others with courtesy and respect, presenting a positive public image.
  • Works well as a team member.
  • Ensures confidentiality and security of patients' medical information.
  • Ability to understand and follow all HVCH Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures for job duties performed.

Essential Functions
  • Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, throat swabs, and nasal swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Checks test requisitions against orders entered in the LIS to assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Corrects discrepancies when found.
  • Verifies positive patient identification by utilizing two approved patient identifiers.
  • Performs venipunctures and capillary sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.
  • Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Coordinates the collection of scheduled/timed tests.
  • Administers oral glucose solution when directed by technical personnel.
  • Initials, dates, and times all collections. Collects and receives all specimens collected in LIS system according to the information documented on the specimen tube.
  • Accessions and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
  • Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
