Health Information Technician

This position involves compiling health information. Responsibilities include reviewing, cataloging, and checking medical reports for completeness. The technician organizes medical reports for placement in files. They review charts to ensure all reports and signatures are present. Tasks also include typing health information forms and preparing charts for new admissions. The technician fills out forms and prepares requests for specific reports or certificates.

They compile and type statistical reports, such as daily and monthly census, admissions, discharges, or length of stay. The technician files reports into health information records and records information in logs and files. They retrieve health information records within the filing system. Providing information from health information records after determining the appropriateness of requests is also a key responsibility. Coordination with other departments concerning health information records procedures is required.

Knowledge of health information technology is essential. Understanding regulations governing medical record keeping and confidentiality of patient information is required. Familiarity with medical terminology is important. Skill in using a typewriter, word processor, and calculator is necessary. The ability to deal with problems involving few variables within a familiar context is essential. Candidates should be able to write routine business letters, evaluations, or records following standard procedures.

Proofreading medical reports and recognizing errors are critical skills. The ability to recognize when medical records information is missing is important. Candidates should be able to gather, collate, and classify information about data, people, or things.
