Position Overview

The Harrison County General Health District is seeking a motivated and community-focused Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or Environmental Health Specialist in Training (EHSIT) to join our Environmental Health Division and make a direct impact on community health.

This position plays a vital role in protecting public health by conducting inspections, responding to complaints, and working collaboratively with residents, businesses, and community partners to ensure compliance with environmental health regulations. We are looking for a candidate who values education, communication, and fairness in enforcement.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Investigate public health complaints (e.g., sewage issues, nuisances, foodborne illness, animal bites)
  • Conduct inspections of:
  • Food service operations (restaurants, vending, retail food establishments, etc.)
  • Household Sewage Treatment Systems
  • Private Water systems and new construction sites
  • Solid waste and septage operations
  • Campgrounds
  • Public Swimming Pools
  • Licensed Tattoo Operations
  • Provide education and guidance to homeowners, contractors, and business owners
  • Review plans, issue permits, and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, documentation, and records
  • Collaborate with community partners and participate in local boards/committees
  • Support public health emergency response activities when needed
Preferred Qualifications (REHS):
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) license through the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain)
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health or a related science field
  • Strong knowledge of environmental health regulations and inspection practices
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable under agency policy
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills along with proficiency using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)
Minimum Qualifications (EHSIT Eligible):
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health or related science field
  • Eligibility to obtain REHS licensure in Ohio
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable under agency policy
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills along with proficiency using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)

New graduates and candidates eligible for Environmental Health Specialist in Training (EHSIT) status are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment
  • Combination of fieldwork and office duties
  • Regular travel throughout the county in personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided)
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Occasional exposure to environmental hazards
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and navigate uneven terrain as needed
Schedule

Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required to respond to public health needs (e.g., after-hour inspections) or emergencies.

Additional Information

  • EHSIT Pay Range: $19.08 - $26.71
  • REHS I Pay Range: $21.14 - $29.60
