Job Summary
Under the direction of the health care provider and clinic supervisor, the MA is responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and well‑being of all patients. The role involves the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment. The MA accurately performs preliminary physical tests such as measuring blood pressure, recording weight, temperature, pulse, respirations and other metrics as directed by established clinical protocols.
Collaboration with other professional disciplines ensures effective and efficient patient care delivery and achievement of desired outcomes.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Perform general patient care by following established standards and procedures.
- Greet and prepare patients for the health care provider.
- Obtain and record vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, drug allergies, current medications and presenting problems.
- Collect urine drug specimens, draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis when required.
- Administer ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topically, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or nasal routes.
- Perform routine tests such as EKGs.
- Schedule patients for diagnostic testing and follow up to ensure completion.
- Communicate with patients regarding test results and plans of care by phone or mail as directed by the physician.
- Prepare, clean, and sterilize instruments; maintain equipment; keep patient exam rooms stocked, clean, and orderly; dispose of contaminated items according to protocol.
- Formulate and document patient plan(s) of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed by the provider.
- Escalate non‑routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager or healthcare provider(s).
- Ensure safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
- Provide for patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma (or GED equivalent).
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred but NOT required.
- CMA certification preferred but NOT required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 5 days of hire.
- Ability to perform urine drug screens and administer injections.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients.
- Demonstrated knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
- Understanding of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
- Positive, caring attitude toward patients.
- Good computer skills using a medical management application.
- Strong work ethic and high level of professionalism.
- Two year medical assistant experience preferred.
