We are seeking a highly experienced and professional Consultant II Life Underwriting New Business field resource. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the Life New Business distribution, at least 10 years of life underwriting experience, and a $5M sign-off limit.

Qualifications

This position can be filled as Hybrid or Remote. This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT Extension program.

As a Life Underwriting Consultant, you’ll analyze, select and classify applications for life insurance, of considerable technical complexity and exposure, to ensure underwriting quality according to established policies, practices and standards. You’ll review and make decisions on larger, more sophisticated, or unusual business. You’ll coordinate life selection standards to achieve satisfactory mortality experience and acceptable administrative results. You’ll have opportunities to provide leadership on projects and teams, identify problems and potential solutions, and serve as a referral point for less experienced underwriters.

You’ll work with latitude for independent judgment based on your underwriting authority and company standards.

Responsibilities (Selected)
  • Receive, evaluate and underwrite complex life insurance applications up to the maximum handling limit approved by the Chief Underwriter, maintaining confidentiality and working within authority limits.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of underwriting manuals, materials, rules, regulations, procedures, medical factors and practices impacting mortality and morbidity underwriting; provide outstanding service to internal and external customers and field partners.
  • Evaluate applications requiring additional evidence of insurability; authorize ordering of underwriting requirements (e.g., medical exams, lab tests, attending physician reports, etc.).
  • Develop understanding of accelerated underwriting and apply risk-based decision-making to determine requirements and appropriate risk class.
