Overview
A law clerk, sometimes referred to as an "associate" or "judicial assistant," works directly for a judge in a court. The role is typically filled by recent law school graduates and is available in local, state, appellate, and high courts across many jurisdictions.
Law clerk positions are awarded to the most promising students and offer a coveted opportunity to gain invaluable experience. These jobs are highly competitive, with duties varying by jurisdiction and level of court.
Responsibilities- Research cases that come before the court
- Assist the judge or justice in writing opinions
- Draft opinions for appellate and supreme courts (subject to final approval by the justice)
- Travel with a judge on circuit (for associates in the High Court of Australia)
- Provide administrative support and perform training functions for lower‑level judges in jurisdictions such as Germany and France
Applicants must be recent law school graduates who have demonstrated strong research and writing skills. Preference is given to candidates who have excelled academically and possess a keen interest in judicial work.
