Tooling Technician - Entry Level Maintenance

The Tooling Technician oversees the installation, maintenance, and repair of molds and machinery used in plastic injection operations. This role performs machining on tooling, including both manual and CNC work, conducts TIG and MIG welding, and carries out preventive maintenance and basic repairs on injection molds. The technician ensures equipment runs reliably and safely by cleaning and servicing tooling, performing quality checks with precision measuring instruments, and supporting continuous improvement within a modern, climate-controlled manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the installation of new molds and machinery for plastic injection operations.
  • Perform machining on tooling using manual machines and CNC machines, including mills and lathes.
  • Set up and operate CNC, manual, and injection mold machines according to production requirements.
  • Conduct TIG and MIG welding on tooling and related components as needed.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance (PMs) and basic maintenance on molds to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Clean, inspect, and repair molds and tooling to maintain high-quality production standards.
  • Perform quality checks using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to guide machining, mold repair, and equipment setup.
  • Document maintenance activities, tooling changes, and quality checks using basic computer applications.
  • Support die and mold maintenance for plastic injection molding and related processes.
  • Collaborate with process technicians and production staff to troubleshoot tooling and mold issues.
  • Contribute to a clean, organized work area and support 5S or process improvement initiatives when applicable.
  • Follow all safety procedures and best practices while operating machinery, welding, and handling tooling.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2–3 years of experience in injection mold or machining environments.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC machines, manual machines, or injection mold machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
  • Proficiency with manual or CNC machines such as mills and lathes.
  • Experience working with plastic injection molding and injection mold equipment.
  • Knowledge of die maintenance and mold maintenance practices.
  • Ability to perform quality checks using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and similar precision tools.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail in tooling and mold work.
  • Capability to work independently and within a team in a manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • TIG and MIG welding experience on tooling and related components.
  • Experience with plastic injection mold tooling and maintenance.
  • Exposure to 5S, lean manufacturing, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Comfort working with new, advanced manufacturing equipment and technology.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for troubleshooting mold and tooling issues.
  • Good communication skills to collaborate effectively with process technicians and production teams.
