The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management and supervision of patient care areas during one’s assigned shift in the absence of Senior Leadership and Department Directors. One acts as the on‑site administrator in the Institute after normal business hours and has the authority and responsibility for administrative decisions and appropriate notification of the Vice President of Nursing.
The Nursing Supervisor is also responsible for the evaluation and management of departmental resources; staffing; handling of patient/family/visitor complaints while on duty; responding to Code Blue and Rapid Response and all other Emergency Codes. During a disaster, functions as the Incident Commander until Senior Leadership arrives.
- Adheres to all regulatory requirements and Registered Nurse professional standards of practice.
- Assesses available staffing resources for each operational area, taking into consideration census, levels of acuity, unscheduled absences and the skill level of assigned staff.
- Based on evaluation of resources, redeploys or reassigns staff as necessary to meet patient care needs.
- Visits all patient care units as often as necessary to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide on‑site support to caregivers, including relieves the RN for meals, breaks.
- Assists with Moderate Sedation at the bedside as the second RN as needed.
- Responsible for reporting all deaths to Life Connections in a timely manner.
- Serves as a resource to nursing and medical staff on hospital policies, procedures and standards. Effectively leads team to maintain high quality care and positive patient outcomes.
- Provides a meaningful report to oncoming Clinical Nursing Supervisor or designee, highlighting areas of concern, potential problems or unusual situations. Provides a 24 hour daily written Administrative report to VP Nursing in addition to midnight census report.
- Participates in the identification of staff learning needs and communicates those assessments and recommendations appropriately.
- Keeps the Vice President Nursing and/or appropriate SLT informed of any situations or circumstances that may be unusual or have serious impact on hospital operations.
- Provides administrative coverage for Services/Departments in the absence of SLT and Department Leader. Collaborates and communicates with other departments about operational issues which affect care delivery
- Activates Incident Command and serves as the Incident Commander in the event of an internal/external disaster until SLT member arrives.
- Participate in Performance Improvement Activities and Committees.
- Attends, Nursing Leadership meetings, LDI and all other mandatory meetings. Reviews Leadership Forum minutes
- Evaluates patient, employee, and all other incidents as they occur. Sees that adequate medical care is given as necessary, and that event reports are completed accurately and timely.
- Oversees the admission of all elective and emergency patients. Works in collaboration with the Coordinator of Utilization Management, physicians, and Patient Services in planning for appropriate level of care for patients.
- Fills the pharmacy needs of nursing staff in the absence of the pharmacist by issuing drugs from the Pharmacy and/or Night Cabinet. Researches drug information when questions or problems arise.
- Contacts physicians, anesthesiologists, and on‑call surgery personnel when emergency surgery is scheduled.
