Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) coordinates and provides clinical care for critically ill patients, performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri‑procedural services, and discharge planning. The APP collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, educates residents, students, and staff, and participates in rapid response and interdisciplinary care delivery.

Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner

Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
National Certification from one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
Current RN license issued by the state of service or multi‑state RN license via the eNLC, plus Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license issued by the West Virginia Board of Nursing.
American Heart Association BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

Preferred Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner

Acute care or critical care experience.
ACNP preferred; FNPs considered.

Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant

Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine/Surgery (as applicable) Physician Assistant required.
Graduate of an ARC‑PA approved Physician Assistant training program.
Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
American Heart Association BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

Preferred Qualifications – Physician Assistant

Master's level education as Physician Assistant preferred.
Critical care or cardiology experience preferred.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Manages comprehensive, individualized care for critically ill patients and their families in the intensive care unit, step‑down units, wards, or upon discharge.

Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre‑procedure evaluations.

Completes integrated assessments.

Orders additional tests or consults as appropriate following established clinical guidelines and protocols.

Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests within scope of practice.

Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.

Documents comprehensive clinical evaluations and findings in the medical record.

Facilitates patient discharge or transfer by coordinating appropriate services and tests for follow‑up as applicable.

Develops individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge or transfer planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.

Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.

Identifies unstable or complex patient situations and initiates appropriate interventions.

Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.

Coordinated follow‑up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.

Assists in the collection of outcome measures as applicable.

Employs critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to manage individual patient needs.

Utilizes equipment safely.

Basing decisions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.

Applies teaching/learning theory and appropriate strategies when educating staff, students, patients, families, and the community.

Promotes a learning environment responsive to patient and family preferences and readiness.

Maintains current knowledge base throughout the year.

Completes all identified clinical competencies.

Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the patient.

Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel.

Participates in community programs and literature distribution as appropriate.

Documents plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient record.

Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient‑outcome improvements.

Leads development and implementation of changes in critical care practice to improve outcomes.
