Position Summary

The Surgical Services Manager leads the patient care services, maintains the administration and management of the Operating Room Department. The Manager provides effective, high quality patient/family focused care that is instrumental in promoting the vision, strategy and tactics of their departments. The manager effectively communicates and exemplifies a vision for change that promotes and unifies the team, to include: coaching, facilitation, mentoring, supporting and teaching the direct reports and staff the skills and attributes needed to work collaboratively with all members of the health care team.

Assumes 24-hour accountability for optimal patient care, patient care standards, fiscal operations and systems, which support patient care. Utilizes corporate strategic plans and policies as a framework to plan and deliver high quality patient care in a cost effective manner.

Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities

Create and communicate a shared vision. Reward appropriate behaviors, address and manage inappropriate behaviors. Counsel and/or discipline staff as needed. Oversee equipment, instruments, implants and special supplies and ensure that all are readily available. Communicates appropriate techniques for using and storing instruments and equipment.

Shares ideas for improvement/participate in the review and revision of clinical policies and procedures. Ensure that all policies and procedures are updated in accordance with evidenced – based practice to ensure patient safety and enhance the work environment and overall operations of the CCOC. Articulate patient care standards as published by the Joint Commission, CMS and professional nursing literature.

Meet with materials management and vendors on regular basis to discuss new products and equipment. Notify Biomedical Engineering and/or maintenance and/or Materials management in purchasing to coordinate repairs or replacement of broken equipment. Collaborate with physicians to evaluate the need for additional patient care equipment to meet operational needs.

Communicate departmental needs and all necessary information with Physicians and appropriate staff. Communicate and document all practice changes to staff directly and through Healthstream Learning Management Systems. Oversee staffing schedules and Vacation Schedule. Interview potential candidates for open positions;
Motivate staff to work as a team to optimize efficiencies in all aspects of patient care. Oversees and plan annual competency program with assistance from Perioperative educator for the Surgical Services. Build credibility with physicians as a champion for patient care, quality and nursing professionalism. Communicate effectively with physicians on process and changes.

Assumes Quality Improvement activities in designated perioperative areas, delegates as needed and coordinates with Quality and Risk Management department. Articulate the organization’s QI program and goals. Work to obtain evidenced-based target outcomes. Ensure staff is educated on risk management and compliance issues. May need to perform duties covering all types of patients when needed – for example, the role of the Circulator Nurse and/or Scrub Tech covering all types of cases as needed.

Maintains current knowledge of patient care delivery. Serve as a change agent when patient care work/workflow is redesigned. Educate patient care team on financial implications of patient care decisions. Manage financial resources.

Position Requirements

Education:

BSN preferred

Experience:

At least 3 to 4 years of clinical surgical services experience.

Prior nursing management experience of comprehensive surgical services and/or management of an ambulatory clinical setting required.

Willingness to stay current in healthcare environment including AORN, JCAHO, OSHA, AAMI and regulatory entities to discern and interpret the potential impact on the Surgical Services Department.

Graduation from an Ohio school of nursing current CPR required, ACLS and PALS preferred
