The department of Recreation Sports and Facilities at the University of Wisconsin‑Whitewater seeks a Groundskeeper (FP026). The role reports to the Grounds Crew Lead for assigned duties within the Recreation/Athletic Field/Stadium Complex. Responsibilities include daily grounds functions, field preparation, indoor set‑ups and take‑downs for athletic and special events, housekeeping, and limited maintenance of various facility buildings. The Groundskeeper may assume Grounds Crew Lead functions in the absence of the Lead and will perform any additional work as assigned by Supervisor(s).

The schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs for events and games.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Grounds Maintenance
    • Edge, aerate, seed, and sod lawns
    • Prune trees and shrubs
    • Mow, seed, plant, fertilize, cultivate, aerate, top‑dress, prune, trim, and water turf and shrubbery
    • Conduct pest control on all field areas
    • Assist in trash removal from athletic/recreation fields and tennis courts
    • Mow and trim grass with self‑propelled equipment
    • Line and prepare athletic and recreation fields for practices and events
    • Perform indoor set‑up and take‑down of tables, chairs, bleachers, risers, and other equipment for athletic and special events
    • Perform game‑day duties as assigned by Grounds Crew Lead
    • Direct, train, and supervise student workers in custodial and grounds functions
  • Maintenance & Housekeeping
    • Clean and sanitize showers, toilets, urinals and restock paper items daily
    • Mop floors and shower areas during seasonal usage
    • Empty trash and recycling containers
    • Vacuum carpet areas in hallways, offices, training rooms, locker rooms, and classrooms
    • Scrub and sanitize sinks, fixtures, floors, walls, doors, stairwells, railings, and food service areas
    • Replace light bulbs and clean fixtures
    • Restock housekeeping supplies as needed
    • Strip floors, apply new floor finish, and extract carpets as needed
    • Clean air vents and dust all areas as needed
    • Inspect weekly for proper operation of water fountains, showers, and urinals
    • Pick up and deliver laundry for Football, Softball, and Baseball teams during competition season
    • Perform routine special maintenance and moving of athletic/recreation equipment
    • Perform limited maintenance such as painting, scrubbing walls, and washing windows
  • General Labor and Groundskeeping
    • Remove snow and ice from steps and sidewalks using shovels or snow blower
    • Work at football stadium as maintenance worker during games
    • Layout and stripe athletic fields
    • Perform other duties assigned by Grounds Crew Lead, Outdoor Facilities Program Managers, or Director of Recreation Sports & Facilities
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma
  • Ability to attain UW System driver authorization within first week of employment
  • Knowledge of safe operation of groundskeeping equipment
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and eligibility to drive state‑owned vehicles

  • Operate a variety of groundskeeping equipment, including heavy motorized machinery, chainsaw, self‑propelled mowers, and string trimmers
  • Use cleaning solutions, agents, and equipment effectively
  • Apply fertilizers and herbicides safely and effectively
  • Lift up to 75 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing without impairment
  • Ensure knowledge of OSHA standards and occupational hazards

Compensation:
Starting hourly wage within the $17/hr – $19/hr range. UW System employees receive an excellent benefit package.
