The Sustainable Forestry Technical Assistance Team Member will serve in a temporary fellowship position, ending June 30, 2027, assisting in ongoing Sustainable Forestry Program projects, with a focus on tree plantings, restoration efforts, and QGIS/ArcGIS mapping. In the goal of developing Team Members’ career readiness, there will be professional development opportunities provided throughout the duration of the position.
This position builds upon the individuals familiarity with forestry issues relevant to Ohio and the Appalachian region including:
1) Basic forest management and restoration practices frequently carried out by Rural Action Forestry, such as tree planting;
2) Basic tree and woody plant identification;
3) Using and maintaining conservation management tools such as chainsaws, weed eaters, and various hand tools;
4) Implementing various forestry practices related to Rural Action Forestry’s work with non-timber forest product cultivation, harvest, processing, and handling.
Team Members are entitled to PTO as outlined in Rural Action’s HR Manual.
Essential Functions Program Implementation and Outreach- Engage with private landowners and partner organizations to coordinate tree plantings;
- GIS mapping for tree plantings and agroforestry projects;
- Technical assistance and education with landowners, and other pertinent projects as they arise;
- Collaborate with other Rural Action Programs (such as the RA Watersheds Program) to support additional restoration efforts.
- Track project metrics, and assist Tech Crew Lead with all reporting requirements relevant to the project (monthly/quarterly/semi-annual/annual);
- Perform varying degrees of data collection and analysis;
- Some supervision of volunteers in collaboration with Forestry Program Director and Tech Crew Lead;
- Attend meetings and assist with presentations on Rural Action’s behalf;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular communication with Forestry Program Director, Tech Crew Lead, and Leadership & Service Assistant Director;
- Maintain daily communication with Tech Crew Lead.
Skills and Abilities
- A high school diploma or GED required;
- Experience with QGIS/ArcGIS preferred;
- Experience in a related field preferred;
- Basic forest management and restoration practices, such as tree planting techniques, trail maintenance, and invasive species control;
- Basic tree and woody plant identification;
- Experience using and maintaining tools such as: weed eaters, and various hand tools;
- Project planning, logistical oversight, and project implementation;
- Self-starter with detail-oriented focus;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Integrity, credibility and commitment to Rural Action’s mission;
- Experience with Google suite, Microsoft Word and Excel, database management, email and other computer software systems;
- Ability to work at a computer in a shared office setting;
- Ability to traverse rough terrain, carry 40 pounds, and work in field conditions.
