Externship Overview
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. An environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.
Responsibilities- Gather patient histories
- Perform physical examinations
- Create treatment plans
- Assist with diagnostics
- Provide dentistry services
- Observe, assist or perform surgical procedures
- Medical management of patients
- Participate in wellness care and surgical procedures for on-site shelter animals
- Engage in client medical and surgical cases
- Perform advanced orthopedic procedures such as TECA, TPLO, Tightrope, and THR weekly
- Communicate with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Third and fourth-year veterinary students.
Stipend and Travel AllowanceEligible students receive a travel/living expense stipend, including reimbursement for gas and food up to $100 per week and a schedule of 5 days on, 2 days off. Students in the clinical portion of their education are also eligible for a stipend program.
