Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Externship Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. An environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

• Gather patient histories
• Perform physical examinations
• Create treatment plans
• Assist with diagnostics
• Provide dentistry services
• Observe, assist or perform surgical procedures
• Medical management of patients
• Participate in wellness care and surgical procedures for on-site shelter animals
• Engage in client medical and surgical cases
• Perform advanced orthopedic procedures such as TECA, TPLO, Tightrope, and THR weekly
• Communicate with the medical team, support staff, and clients

Third and fourth-year veterinary students.

Eligible students receive a travel/living expense stipend, including reimbursement for gas and food up to $100 per week and a schedule of 5 days on, 2 days off. Students in the clinical portion of their education are also eligible for a stipend program.
