Offer Description

MS-RADAM (“Multi Scale phenomena in RAdiation DAMage”) is a European Doctoral Network project funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme. The project brings together leading academic and industrial partners from eight European countries (Germany, France, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Georgia) to train a new generation of interdisciplinary researchers.

MS-RADAM aims to advance the understanding of key radiation-induced biodamage phenomena at the nano- and larger scales, with applications in particle therapy, radiotherapy, and radio protection. These include the formation of DNA strand breaks by ionising radiation, DNA repair, radio sensitisation by metal nanoparticles, cell survival and radioresistance.

The MS-RADAM research programme combines state-of-the-art computational multiscale modelling (using DFT/TDDFT methods, collision theory, molecular dynamics, stochastic dynamics, Monte Carlo and analytical methods)
and its thorough validation using advanced experimental techniques (such as mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, radiochemistry and radio biology experiments with biomolecular and biological systems such as oligonucleotides, DNA origami, radio sensitising nanoparticles, living cells and multicellular targets).

MS-RADAM invites applications for a 36-month, full-time, fixed-term position as a Doctoral Candidate (DC). The successful candidate will be employed by Institute of Biophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences
in Brno, Czech Republic, and enrolled in the PhD programme at the Masaryk University Brno. The Institute of Biophysics is the leading biophysics institute in the Czech Republic, well equipped with modern instrumentation and state of the art techniques. We provide 3D confocal fluorescence microscopy combined with automatic image analysis software, as well as super resolution localization microscopy and sophisticated mathematical evaluation tools.

The Department of Cell Biology and Radiobiology (DC ) investigates the biological effects of various types of ionizing radiation in basic science, cancer radiotherapy, and space research; a unique feature is its focus on DNA damage and repair within the cell nucleus and chromatin.

The DC11 research project, entitled “Radiobiological effects in cells irradiated with different types of ionizing radiation”, will experimentally validate the multiscale modelling predictions against (i) experimentally derived survival probabilities of cells (gold standard experiments) exposed to ionizing radiation, (ii) structural and topological analyses of DNA damage sites and chromatin organization, and (iii) protein organization reflecting different repair mechanisms. DC11 will determine the optimal irradiation conditions with respect to optimal biological outcomes (e.g. the cell survival probability and heterochromatin reorganization pathways) in the region of the spread-out Bragg peak stretching over the biological target dimensions.

The experimental results will be compared with theoretical and computational modeling results through close collaboration with other partners within the MS-RADAM network.

In addition to specialised scientific training, the position offers extensive international mobility, secondments to partner organisations, and training in transferable skills such as research management, communication, and career development.
