PhD Position in Vector-Borne Disease Modeling, Germany

Applications are now being accepted for a PhD Position in Vector-Borne Disease Modeling at Heidelberg University. The selected student will work with advanced statistical, machine learning, and process-based approaches to improve prediction of climate-sensitive diseases across Germany, beginning January 2026.

Applicants must be prepared to participate actively in the research group’s academic activities and contribute to collaborative projects within the VBD-MODE consortium. A solid understanding of dynamical systems, statistical modeling, or global health topics will strengthen their application.

  • Eligible Countries: All countries
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship/position will be awarded to candidates pursuing a PhD related to Vector-Borne Disease Modeling, involving statistics, computer science, mathematics, infectious disease modeling, climate and environmental sciences, and related fields offered by Heidelberg University.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in at least one programming language (R, Python, Julia, MATLAB).
    • Show interest in infectious disease dynamics, global health, public health, climate and environmental sciences.
    • Possess strong written and oral communication skills in English.
    • Be able to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
    • Show interest or experience in dynamical systems, time-series modeling, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, or environmental/climate data (considered a merit).
    • Demonstrate readiness for transdisciplinary and collaborative research.
