Research Scientist – Ceramics and Composites
Position is part of the ceramics and composites team at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The role focuses on basic and applied research involving characterization and processing of ceramics and ceramic composites.
Responsibilities- Support production of new ceramic powders, sintered samples, and layup composites.
- Collaborate closely with government and contract researchers and other research teams.
- Apply new approaches and techniques in materials processing and characterization.
- Participate in inert‑environment experimentation (e.g., glovebox, air‑free synthesis).
Required
- U.S. citizenship.
- BS or MS in Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Chemistry, Ceramic Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with materials processing and characterization.
- Ability to learn and develop new techniques.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Self‑motivated with strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
- Adaptability to varying program objectives.
Desired
- Experience with ceramic and/or composite processing and characterization.
- Experience with powder processing, sintering, and characterization.
- Experience with inert‑environment experimentation (glovebox, air‑free synthesis).
- Experience with SEM, TEM, sample polishing, TGA, XRD, rheometry, and/or dilatometry.
This position requires access to information that is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”). Current U.S. citizenship may be required for certain contract requirements.
