Job

Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is looking for a dedicated scientific project assistant for the EU Horizon collaborative project MAR-CO2 — an international research consortium developing and testing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The assistant will support the project coordination both in terms of content and organization, prepare scientific results for expert audiences, policymakers, and the public, and act as an interface between international project partners, the European Commission, and relevant mCDR stakeholders.

The position combines scientific content work with project coordination and science communication at the interface of marine research, climate policy, and marine carbon removal.

Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.

The position is part-time (planned with 15 h/week) for 4 years.

Scientific Content Work & Communication
  • Content development and editorial preparation of scientific deliverables, milestone reports, and reviews for the European Commission
  • Independent creation of science communication materials (project website, newsletter, social media content, press releases, outreach materials) for diverse target audiences: experts, policymakers, industry and mCDR stakeholders, and the general public
  • Research and preparation of scientific and policy background information (e.g., on mCDR policy, MRV frameworks, EU climate targets) to inform decision‑making by the project coordination
Project Coordination & Administration
  • Content‑related preparation and follow‑up of scientific workshops, consortium meetings, and stakeholder events, including synthesis of discussion outcomes
  • Maintaining scientific networks and interface communication with international project partners at a technical/content level
  • Support with data management tasks in line with FAIR principles and EU Open Science requirements
  • Administrative project support, including scheduling, deadline monitoring, and reporting
Your profile
  • Completed university degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., marine sciences, environmental sciences, oceanography, etc.)
  • Knowledge of marine science, the carbon cycle, climate science, and/or marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science to different target audiences — from experts to policymakers to the general public
  • Experience in scientific writing (publications, reports, project proposals) and/or science communication (outreach, press work, social media)
  • Experience managing externally funded projects, ideally Horizon Europe or comparable EU funding programs
  • Excellent written and spoken German and English skills (at least C1)
  • Confident use of common office software and reference management tools (e.g., Zotero, End Note); basic knowledge of data visualization or graphic design is a plus
We offer you
  • an exciting and varied job in a research centre with around 1,000 employees from more than 60 nations
  • a well‑connected research campus (public transport) and best networking opportunities, subsidy for the Deutschlandticket if certain conditions are met (job ticket)
  • individual opportunities for further training
  • social benefits according to the collective agreement of the public service and remuneration up to pay group 13 (according to EntgO Bund)
  • an excellent technical infrastructure and modern workplace equipment
  • 6 weeks holiday per year; company holidays between Christmas and New Year's Day
  • very good compatibility private and professional life; offers of mobile and flexible work
  • family‑friendly company policy with childcare facilities, e. g. nursery close to the company
  • free assistance program for employees (EAP)
  • a varied offer in the canteen on campus

Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
