What You’ll Do
This position works under general direction and requires thorough knowledge of custody, safety and security measures for detention of adult felons.
- Working with the Correction Specialists, directs all prison operations for assigned shift, including conducting briefings, overseeing work performance of incarcerated persons, reporting employee incidents for possible discipline, ensuring orderly movement of incarcerated persons, and conducting periodic inspection rounds to ensure compliance with all security, safety, sanitation, contraband, fire, and other institutional regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Directs security operations on assigned shift related to security, safety, custody, count procedures and control of incarcerated persons.
- Acts as prison administrative manager in absence of warden with authority to make any and all necessary critical incident decisions.
- Monitors security threat group activity.
- Identifies and addresses security vulnerabilities.
- Fills in the absence of higher-ranking officials, as needed.
- Supervises, evaluates and approves leave requests for Correction Lieutenants and other assigned staff.
- Enforces utilization of body-worn cameras with custody staff and ensures the proper utilization of body scanners with the incarcerated population.
- Provides instruction and training to subordinates on security, custody, rules and regulations.
- Writes post orders to provide instructions to Correction Officers assigned to the post.
- Acts as liaison between custody and all other departments to communicate rules, regulations, and special concerns when Correction Major is absent.
- Meets with and shares information in all units.
- Assists the Corrections Specialist in developing, implementing, and enforcing unit plans.
- Attends meetings.
- Performs related duties and security functions as requested (e.g., directs security of special events, conducts institution tours).
- Completes daily logs and reports and responds to miscellaneous correspondences (e.g., incarcerated population kites).
- Makes periodic rounds.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.; 3 years training or 3 years experience in enforcement of security methods for detention of felons or consumers who are criminally insane in a controlled environment; 12 months training or 12 months experience in supervisory principles/techniques.
- Or high school diploma or G.E.D.; 12 months experience as Correction Lieutenant, 46535.
- Or high school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 years experience as Correction Sergeant/Counselor, 46532.
- Or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
