Location: Dunlap
Under thedirect supervision of the Administrative Sergeant, the primary responsibility of all School Safety Officer is to provide a safe school environment, freefrom crime, drug abuse, and violence.
SCOPE:Protect the livesand property of the people of the Colerain Township, enforce the laws of thestate and the ordinances of the Township and to serve the people in whateverway necessary within the scope of their particular assignment.
ESSENTIAL ROLES & RESPONSIBLILITIES:In addition tothe job functions of a Uniformed Patrol Officer of Colerain Police Department, a School Safety Officer must perform each of the following tasks.
The omission of specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- The primary function of the School Safety Officer (SSO) is to provide physical security in the school.
- Provide necessary safety services in and around school property, while providing protection for the school staff, students, and property.
- Have primary accountability to the School Safety Sergeant.
- Maintain a working relationship with all Department personnel, especially personnel in which theirschools are located.
- Thoroughly investigate all incidents coming to his/her attention and make appropriate reports.
- Create a readable copy of all such reports to be made and forwarded to supervision for review.
- Keep the School Safety Sergeantthoroughly advised of all incidents coming to the SSO’s attention. Extraordinary incidents are to be immediately reported.
- Perform other safety-related dutiesas directed by the police department and/or school administration.
- Prioritize and promptly respond ina safe manner to dispatched calls related to the schools to ensure that the investigation of any complaint is conducted in a thorough manner, usingapproved techniques to expedite adjudication or closure.
- Conduct preliminary investigationsat the scene of incidents to which he/she is summoned or observes,determining what, if any, crime has been committed, taking appropriate actions to ensure the mission of the Department.
- Maintain acceptable standards ofconduct.
- Follow the direction ofsupervisors.
- Refrain from abusive andthreatening conduct toward co-workers.
- Maintain the confidence and trustof peers, superiors and general citizenry.
- Self-disciplined, self-motivated and work independently of direct supervision.
- Strength ininterpersonal skills as well as the ability to work independently. Must possess leadership skills and knowledge of current law enforcement strategies. Requires ability to handle stressful situations and exhibit compassion and good judgment when dealing withthe public.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability tospeak effectively before groups, employees, or the general public. - Ability to work with mathematicalconcepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts and to apply conceptssuch as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. - Ability to get along with other employees.
- Ability to solvepractical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables insituations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Any additional duties determined by the Chief of Police.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be bonded.
- Must maintain an Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy (OPOTA) certification andeligible for certification or a qualified, retired law enforcementofficer as defined in “The Law Enforcement Officers’ Safety Act”.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear, use hands andfingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and to reach withhands and arms.
