Central Energy Plant Technician Apprentice or Journeyman Overview
The Central Energy Plant employees (CEP Technician, Apprentice or CEP Technician, Journeyman) maintain, repair, and install Energy plant equipment and production Systems. They manage and monitor Facilities alarms from across campus while keeping the steam pressure and chilled water systems supplying campus at peak performance.
Responsibilities- Promotes continuous improvements of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Operates, cleans, and performs preventive maintenance on rotating and stationary equipment, including high pressure boilers, gas turbines, industrial chillers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Operates boiler and auxiliary equipment and controls the generation of steam, chilled water, electricity, and compresses air with programmable logic controller’s or desktop computer-based controls.
- Starts, stops and reconfigures chilled water production to maintain the most efficient operation parameters necessary to meet the changing needs of the University.
- Continuously monitors various gauges and automatic recording devices at specified times to assess operating conditions and records operational data, including equipment temperatures, pressures, hours of operation, fuel consumption, water levels, water consumption and electrical production and management.
- Inspects equipment and corrects problems to ensure the safe and economical operation of all central energy plant equipment. Submits reports to ensure efficient utilization of equipment and adherence to the preventive maintenance program.
- Cleans, lubricates, services, and performs maintenance and repair of all central energy plant equipment, such as replacing and/or repacking bearings and valves and repairing lines.
- Maintains various records including maintenance logs, testing measurements, alarms, inspections, and time cards.
- Monitors and responds to critical alarms from all across campus.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties such as housekeeping, using floor scrubber, broom, and mop, and all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications for Central Energy Plant Technician Apprentice:
- High School Diploma or GED or aptitude plus experience is required.
- Must be able to work 12‑hour shifts including nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications for Central Energy Plant Technician Journeyman include the above qualifications plus the following:
- Four years of experience working around and with boilers.
- Knowledge of pumps and valves.
- Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.
- Computer knowledge.
- Experience in troubleshooting problems in mechanical equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to troubleshoot problems with mechanical equipment, plumbing, utilities, and distribution systems.
- Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Basic computer skills such as E‑mail, data entry in operator log, timecard, and work order software.
