Job Summary

Responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems, including air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating. Lead and train lower‑level technicians and supervise inmates, ensuring compliance with security and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead worker – provide work direction and training over lower‑level air quality technicians and/or incarcerated individuals.
  • Perform highly skilled maintenance and installation work on HVAC equipment.
  • Periodically inspect operation of equipment and perform preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Repair air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating systems.
  • Replace or repair pumps, fan motors, thermostats and filters.
  • Weld metal components.
  • Inspect and test installed equipment for proper assembly and required repairs.
  • Determine and complete materials needed, provide cost estimates, and submit purchase requests.
  • Read blueprints and/or schematic diagrams.
  • Maintain inventory of HVAC supplies and tool counts used by incarcerated individuals.
  • Perform other maintenance and miscellaneous duties (e.g., semi‑skilled carpentry, painting, electrical, sheet metal, HVAC).
  • Ensure compliance with security regulations.
  • Serve on institutional committees and attend training, seminars, and meetings.
  • Perform security functions as required (e.g., man-down, shakedown, inmate movement).
  • Perform other duties as assigned (e.g., snow and ice removal and grass cutting).
Qualifications

EPA Section 608 technician certification (Type I, II, III or Universal) and at least 6 months verifiable experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning & refrigeration maintenance, repair & installation.

One course or 3 months experience in blueprint reading, hand & power tool operation, and minor welding operation.

Or 6 months experience as an Air Quality Technician I (Job 52291) with the required certifications.

Or equivalence to the minimum class qualifications noted above.
