BC Excavating is seeking experienced Heavy Equipment Operators with a strong civil construction background to join our growing team. In this role, you will operate a wide range of equipment, from skid steers to 93,000-pound dozers, on mass earthwork and substation site work projects throughout Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE- Operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently while following project plans and specifications with minimal supervision.
- Read grades accurately and confidently utilize GPS machine control systems on civil and substation projects.
- Complete Daily Task Hazard Analysis (DTHA) forms and pre-shift equipment inspections consistently and without prompting.
- Support the crew with labor tasks as needed. In our non-union environment, everyone contributes to project success.
- Communicate proactively with the site foreman regarding progress, equipment conditions, and safety concerns.
- Advance through BC Excavating's performance development process and pursue opportunities for increased responsibility and leadership.
- Operate heavy equipment, including excavators, dozers, graders, and skid steers (up to 93,000 pounds), on mass earthwork, substation, and civil excavation projects throughout Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia.
- Execute grading plans using GPS machine control systems while reading grades in tenths and maintaining project specifications.
- Complete daily pre-shift equipment inspections, DTHA forms, and participate in job briefings.
- Perform labor duties when required, including loading and unloading materials, trench support, pipe installation assistance, and other site-related tasks.
- Maintain equipment in a clean and operational condition and immediately report mechanical issues or safety concerns.
- Meet project timelines, quality standards, and performance expectations established by site leadership.
Proficient in operating civil excavation equipment, including excavators, dozers, graders, scrapers, and skid steers. Understands equipment limitations, ground conditions, and safe operating practices.
GPS Machine ControlExperienced using GPS grade control systems such as Trimble, Topcon, or similar platforms. Comfortable adapting to new technologies and project-specific configurations.
Grade Reading and Construction MathAble to interpret grades in tenths, understand slope calculations, and work within project tolerances outlined in civil drawings and site plans.
Safety and ComplianceCommitted to OSHA standards and site-specific safety requirements. Consistently completes required inspections, documentation, and hazard assessments.
Team-Oriented MindsetWilling to step out of the cab and assist with labor tasks when needed. Demonstrates flexibility and a team-first attitude.
Travel ReadinessComfortable traveling and working away from home for extended periods throughout Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. Responsible for managing travel arrangements within provided per diem guidelines.
CommunicationCommunicates effectively with foremen, superintendents, and crew members. Seeks clarification when needed and responds constructively to feedback.
REQUIREMENTSRequired Qualifications
- Minimum of one (1) year of civil excavation equipment operating experience in environments such as substations, grading, earthwork, utility corridors, or similar projects
- Experience using GPS machine control systems such as Trimble, Topcon, or equivalent
- Ability to read grades and work accurately in tenths
- Willingness to travel throughout Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia, including overnight stays
- Ability and willingness to perform labor tasks as required in a non-union work environment
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to designated reporting locations
