Under general supervision, the Diesel Mechanic conducts complex and difficult auto mechanic work including repair and maintenance of gas, diesel, fire apparatus and heavy equipment. The employee diagnoses, adjusts, re‑aligns and/or repairs automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus equipment and all types of City vehicles, including diesel and gasoline powered on‑and‑off‑road equipment with little to no assistance. Daily duties include preventive maintenance, documentation of work, safekeeping of tools, maintenance of a clean work area and correct use of maintenance and repair procedures.
The employee communicates with the public and other departments, exercising cordiality, tact and diplomacy. This position has no supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Conduct standard mechanic work, including preventive maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of all vehicle systems.
- Diagnose and repair emissions, electrical, fuel, brake, and suspension systems.
- Use diagnostic equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, pressure gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.
- Perform hydraulic and pneumatic system repairs, including pumping and wipers.
- Raise vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment for service using hydraulic jacks or electric hoists.
- Follow checklists to inspect belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and safety devices.
- Maintain engine and engine parts such as fuel injection, carburetors, compressors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records of jobs, materials, parts, fuel usage, and maintenance history.
- Assist other mechanics or manual labor tasks as directed by the Fleet Director.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area and conduct all work safely.
Education & Experience Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent and 1 year of post‑specialized training from a Technical or Vocational Institute in Automotive Technology/Mechanics (minimum 2 years certificate in Diesel Mechanics).
- Technical or vocational education may be waived or substituted with 4 years of proven work experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred.
- Complete background investigation required.
- Pass drug, physical, and pre‑placement screenings administered by the City medical office.
- Hold a current valid Class “C” driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety with no more than two moving traffic violations in the past two years.
- Provide own tools necessary for daily preventive maintenance duties.
- Possess four years of previous work experience as a Diesel Mechanic.
- Show thorough technical knowledge of both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment.
- Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs in accordance with NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In‑Service Automotive Fire Apparatus.
- Hold current EVT (Fire Apparatus) certifications appropriate for system or component maintenance.
- Hold current ASE certifications (T1‑T8) or EVT (Fire Apparatus) certifications for Medium/Heavy Truck systems.
- Hold current EVT Master Level 3 certification for fire pumps, industrial supply pumps, or related apparatus components.
- Undergo random drug testing due to safety‑sensitive position.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and internet research.
- Effective planning, scheduling, and coordination with city departments.
- Strong communication and customer‑service orientation.
- Accurate use of hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges) and power tools (pneumatic wrenches, jacks, hoists).
- Ability to repair and service engine, electrical, hydraulic, and air conditioning systems.
- Responsive to diagnostics and able to adjust, disassemble, and re‑assemble dimensions per manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain records, estimate parts and labor, and produce reports as required.
General office and safety equipment/materials include personnel computer, keyboard, printer, copy machine, telephone, cell phone, fax machine, paper cutter, city vehicle, computer software, mouse, pens, pencils, highlighters, etc.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Work irregular hours or shifts as needed.
