POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Chief Probation Officer, Probation Officers supervise offenders placed on community control by the Miami County Common Pleas Court.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology, rehabilitation services, or a related field is required. Strong computer, typing, written, and verbal communication skills are required. A valid Ohio Driver’s License is required. Prior employment experience in a criminal justice setting is preferred. Knowledge and fluency in evidence‑based practices and cognitive behavioral therapy programming are preferred.

Ability to conduct appropriate risk/needs assessment or to become certified is required. Prior experience teaching Cognitive Behavioral Interventions T4C, Carey Guides, BITS, and Cost Benefit Analysis is preferred. Experience building case plans, using motivational interviewing, and Core Correctional Practices is preferred. A background in grant implementation and/or statistical analysis is desired as tracking recidivism data is essential to determining the success of rehabilitation.

Must be capable of remaining neutral, fair, and objective; maintain a professional demeanor under pressure; be punctual, well‑organized, and able to work within strict time constraints; comfortable working in an office, jail, and field setting; and work with a diverse population of felony‑convicted individuals, some high‑risk or violent. The position may require working outside regular business hours and carrying a firearm or Taser.

DUTIES
  • Supervise and provide case management to offenders granted community control supervision.
  • Ensure compliance with supervision terms and conditions, including court‑ordered financial obligations.
  • Meet with offenders on a scheduled and unscheduled basis to monitor behavior and promote compliance through evidence‑based practices.
  • Assess risk and needs of offenders using an approved risk assessment tool; create case plans with offenders and refer to community agencies (substance abuse, mental health, housing, food assistance, education, employment, cognitive behavioral therapy).
  • Implement intervention strategies to reduce recidivism and promote success.
  • Maintain case records with accurate, timely entries in Court View or other case management systems.
  • Draft documents such as status reports, arrest notices, violation reports, warrant requests, and termination reports.
  • Make home, employment, and collateral visits; investigate violations.
  • Testify in court and attend violation hearings; provide input on supervision compliance.
  • Attend Drug Court and treatment team meetings; conduct drug and alcohol testing.
  • Collect DNA samples; conduct searches, seizures, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Transport offenders as required.
  • Maintain relationships with supervisors, law enforcement, jails, prosecutor’s office, defense attorneys, social service and treatment agencies, and other court agencies.
  • Compile statistical data and obtain certifications for OHLEG, Spillman, and other databases.
  • Attend professional training and conferences; stay current with policies and procedures.

Monday‑Friday;
Non‑Exempt from Overtime.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

May be required to lift up to 15 pounds; occasionally subdue adults; frequently climb, stoop, kneel, and lift; perform repetitive reading and writing; exposure to general office chemicals and air contaminants; work in crowds; contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; exposure to threatening situations; work in proximity to firearms; work on client homes with unknown hazards; exposure to second‑hand smoke and vicious animals;

hazardous driving conditions.
