Data Engineer, Software Engineer
Based in Berlin and with more than 120 million users in 190 countries, this digital community for athletes is looking to bring on a Senior Geospatial Data engineer to bolster their mapping and data processing team on a hybrid basis.
The clientTheir platform offers a holistic view of your active lifestyle – no matter where you live, which sport you partake in or what device you use.
Some info on their stack:
The Map Platform team builds and maintains a broad range of data pipelines, APIs and services that make up the map platform. They employ a mix of Golang and Python;
Go for services and Python’s geospatial data processing ecosystem in their pipelines. Their code is deployed in containers orchestrated by Kubernetes (AWS EKS) and their data layer is heavily based on Postgre
SQL (PostGIS) and S3.
Throughout their stack there are a wide variety of geospatial data types, processing workflows and geospatial services including their own custom tile server built in Go. Both vector and raster data are heavily represented throughout the stack – from raw satellite imagery pipelines to amazing winter mosaics and from global scale terrain processing to large scale ingestion of user tracked GPS traces.

What will I be doing?
You will directly impact the product experience by building a rich and informative map platform for over a 100 million users. You’ll be developing and maintaining their mapping pipelines and geospatial offering. They work at scale in system and architecture level as well as down in the weeds at an implementational and coding level. By collaborating cross-functionally with other teams you’ll solve business requirements, identify and deliver cost optimizations and maintain high-availability services.
You’d also be designing and implementing enhancements to their current systems. A bit more info here:
- You don’t just like Mapping, but LOVE it.
- You and the team will take responsibility for developing new features, following the full feature lifecycle.
- A strong focus on discussing and challenging, sharing knowledge and experience and looking to help more junior members of the team progress.
What experience do I need?
In a nutshell, they need someone who’s highly proficient in geospatial pipeline orchestration. You’ll ideally having extensive experience with Kubernetes, geospatial query development and spatial analysis, as well as data storage, schema design and indexing. Experience with geospatial data such as QGIS, GDAL and Rasterio is a must.
Golang is a large part of the role so experience here is essential. Python and Bash scripting experience would be very useful. You’ll also have worked with relational databases (they use Postgre
SQL), using GIS extensions or similar.
Experience with DAG based pipelines and/or queue is a bonus, ideally having processed large volumes of data in the cloud.
The candidateWhat’s in it for me?
They’re offering up to €139,777 for the role as well as a wide range of benefits. These include 25 days annual leave (plus public holidays) and an IT Stipend (€ 82.78/month added to monthly pay).
Some other perks include a gear & events stipend (up to €915 per calendar year used for gear/clothes, athletic events, or any gear that keeps you active), a learning & development allowance of €1,820 and a health club stipend (up to €460 per calendar year used for any membership to a gym, athletic facility, personal training or coaching).
