Job Description

The Track Supervisor position is an experienced, full-time, exempt salaried supervisory role of Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE). This position is responsible for the safe inspection, maintenance, and repair of all track structure and right-of-way in assigned territory in accordance with W&LE standards and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations. The Track Supervisor directly supervises, leads, and develops track forces to ensure safe, high-quality maintenance performance while efficiently planning daily work and allocating resources to support railroad operations.

This role also focuses on safety leadership, compliance enforcement, emergency response, and thorough documentation of inspections, testing, and maintenance activities. Track Supervisors work outdoors in all weather conditions with variable and irregular hours, including after-hours callouts and on-call response as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage safe and efficient work conditions.
  • Efficiently plan work and allocate resources to ensure safe and effective completion of tasks.
  • Enforce compliance with FRA regulations, company rules, and safety procedures.
  • Conduct efficiency and operational tests.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise daily track maintenance and repair activities.
  • Inspect track conditions and ensure track meets required safety standards.
  • Lead, coach, and develop employees to improve technical knowledge, performance, and safety awareness.
  • Respond to emergencies and service interruptions (derailments, weather events, track defects, etc.).
  • Coordinate after-hours callouts and on-call response as needed.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments to support operations.
  • Complete required reports, inspection documentation, and related records.
  • Understand and apply collective bargaining agreements to a unionized workforce.

Working Conditions

  • Work safely at all times in compliance with all safety and operating rules.
  • Outdoors in all types of weather for many hours at a time.
  • Walk on uneven and irregular surfaces for long distances.
  • Wear required PPE for the job task(s).

Full Time

  • Full time (salary/overtime exempt).
  • Variable and irregular work hours with irregularly scheduled days off.
  • Employees work weekdays, weekends and holidays on an “on call” basis, 24 hours a day.

Travel

  • Travel is required throughout assigned territory and/or system.
  • Must be willing and able to work any hours at any location on the railroad in OH and PA.
  • Relocation may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One or more years of supervisory experience in railroad engineering operations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • General engineering and construction knowledge.
  • Knowledge of FRA regulatory standards.
  • Knowledge of curve elevation design theory and string lining curves.
  • Proficient in writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
