Registered Nurse (RN)
The primary responsibility of this position is to supervise the day‑to‑day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The RN shall ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
Essential DutiesThese functions are essential but may be supplemented with additional duties that are related to the role.
Administrative Functions- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for nursing operations.
- Ensure reference materials (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards) are current at nursing stations.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and ensure all staff comply with its procedures.
- Prepare and present written and oral reports to the Director regarding department operations and policy updates.
- Review policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions, and recommend revisions to the Director.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
- Ensure personnel comply with job descriptions and maintain documentation.
- Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program.
- Respond to facility surveys and state inspections as requested.
- Review and update residents’ written discharge plans, and assist the Director in planning nursing components of discharge planning.
- Conduct meetings with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
- Complete accident/incident reports.
- Interpret department policies for personnel and external parties.
- Complete administrative documentation such as medical forms, evaluations, and reports.
- Safeguard user password credentials and report breaches.
- Maintain confidentiality of protected health information and report violations.
- Report attempts to access the facility’s information system without authorization.
- Attend required committee meetings (Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment, etc.).
- Prepare written or oral reports for committee(s) as directed.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Assist in developing agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review discharge plans for the Care Plan Committee and implement recommendations.
- Ensure adequate staffing of licensed practical and registered nurses for each shift.
- Maintain sufficient certified nursing assistants for routine care needs.
- Develop work assignments and assist staff in task completion.
- Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
- Ensure nursing assistants are properly trained and supervised.
- Conduct daily rounds to monitor staff performance and report findings to the Director.
- Monitor absenteeism and report staffing gaps.
- Enforce departmental dress code and other policies.
- Review complaints and grievances, and report to the Director.
- Maintain professional rapport with inter‑department personnel.
- Create a warm, calm environment on the unit.
- Lead shift meetings to identify and correct problems.
- Evaluate workforce and recommend staffing changes.
- Participate in performance evaluations and staffing decisions.
- Administer disciplinary actions fairly and non‑discriminatorily.
- Report occupational exposures to blood and hazardous substances.
- Report suspected fraud and report protection of unattended workstations.
- Inform staff of new admissions and prepare rooms.
- Greet and escort residents to rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians.
- Encourage timely physician documentation.
- Notify the Director of delayed physician visits.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians on care planning.
- Notify physician and next‑of‑kin of changes in resident condition.
- Conduct daily resident visits to assess physical and emotional status.
- Assure direct nursing care by qualified staff.
- Review nursing notes for adequacy and alignment with resident wishes.
- Provide direct nursing care as required.
