Job Summary
The Plant Controller has a direct reporting relationship to the Director, Plant and Cost Accounting within the Corporate Controllers department. This position acts as a key business partner to the Plant General Manager and their direct reports by providing financial oversight, critical analysis, and actively soliciting process improvement opportunities. The Plant Controller is responsible for providing timely and accurate financial and operational reporting with corresponding analysis while maintaining high level of internal control over reporting practices.
The role directs all financial activities related to accounting processes, annual planning, periodic spare parts reviews, fixed assets, maintenance activities, and budgeted or unplanned turnarounds, and manages all internal and external audit requirements.
- Supervises and directs the month‑end close process: preparing, reviewing, and verifying accuracy of journal entries, accounting classifications, and account analysis.
- Ensures accurate Fixed Assets accounting and maintains close relationships with Maintenance and Engineering managers for project tracking, asset capitalizations and retirements, internal order classification, and accrual review.
- Leads monthly cost review meetings comparing actual results to plan and prior periods, using data‑driven insights to improve business decisions.
- Supports quarterly and annual internal and external audits by providing requested documentation and analysis.
- Prepares the annual budget and contributes to budget forecasting updates throughout the year.
- Oversees preparation of cost statements, accounting statements, and operational reports.
- Ensures production and accounts payable invoices are accurately recorded daily while supervising clerical and professional staff.
- Communicates deviations from established policies to Corporate personnel.
- Manages local plant Accounts Payable function and analyzes monthly aging reports.
- Reconciles and reviews inventory through local production reporting systems.
- Provides financial forecasting, budgeting, and analysis of variations from company budgets.
- Prepares exhibits and commentary for reports issued to management, outside directors, and government agencies.
- Provides leadership, guidance, coaching, and process oversight for plant accounting.
- Assists Financial Planning & Analysis through annual plan and forecasting periods.
- Advises stakeholders on accounting implications of strategic decisions and highlights potential risks to internal controls and compliance.
- Provides direction to individuals regarding their role and responsibilities.
- Promotes corporate controller group via strong relationships between department members and other CF departments.
- Reduces internal control risks through process and procedure review and corrective action recommendations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 10+ years supervisory experience in manufacturing accounting (high volume of capital projects, multiple products, intricate processes).
- Preferred: CPA, MBA, and public accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
- Proficiency in PC, Windows environment, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with SAP accounting systems desired.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and administrative skills.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and understand detailed instructions.
