Institution OverviewThe University of Oklahoma (OU) and OU Health are seeking a highly qualified Staff Hepatologist with transplant hepatology experience for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to join Oklahoma’s only comprehensive academic medical center. OU Health is home to an established liver transplant program serving both adult and pediatric patients and is recognized for its multidisciplinary approach that integrates advanced clinical care, innovative research, and comprehensive education.
The program recently completed the state’s first evidence‑based liver transplant for a particularly challenging form of bile duct cancer, placing OU Health among a select group of programs nationwide offering this advanced treatment.
This faculty position offers the opportunity to practice transplant hepatology within a collaborative academic environment. The Staff Hepatologist will provide specialized care to patients with advanced liver disease and liver transplant candidates and recipients. The role emphasizes clinical excellence, active participation in multidisciplinary transplant services, and contribution to the teaching and scholarly missions of OU Health. Faculty rank will be commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Care & Patient Services- Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with advanced liver disease, including pre‑ and post‑liver transplant care.
- Participate in the evaluation, selection, and ongoing management of liver transplant candidates in accordance with evidence‑based protocols.
- Collaborate closely with transplant surgeons, anesthesiologists, transplant coordinators, advanced practice providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary transplant team.
- Participate in inpatient consult services and outpatient hepatology clinics.
- Share in on‑call responsibilities related to transplant hepatology services.
- Adhere to established transplant protocols and policies to ensure compliance with UNOS, OPTN, CMS, and institutional standards.
- Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, and data reporting initiatives supporting transplant program outcomes.
- Assist with outreach and referral development efforts in collaboration with program leadership.
- Participate in clinical research, quality improvement projects, or scholarly activities related to hepatology and liver transplantation, consistent with academic rank.
- Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers as part of OU Health’s academic mission.
- Remain current with advances in hepatology and transplant medicine and integrate evidence‑based practices into patient care.
- MD or DO degree
- Board certified in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology
- Completion of an ACGME‑accredited Gastroenterology fellowship and Transplant Hepatology fellowship
- Eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, based on training, experience, and scholarly record.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in transplant hepatology, including management of pre‑ and post‑liver transplant patients.
- Academic medical center or high‑volume transplant program experience preferred.
- Strong clinical expertise in advanced liver disease and transplant hepatology.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary academic and clinical environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to patient‑centered care, teaching, and continuous quality improvement.
- Applicants must have or be able to obtain a Oklahoma medical license prior to employment and be BC/BE in Gastroenterology.
- Candidates are eligible for faculty appointments through the OU College of Medicine – appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishment and experience.
- Continued employment will be contingent upon successfully obtaining Board Certification in the eligibility timeframe of your specialty.
- Position based at OU Health in Oklahoma City within a dedicated transplant and hepatology clinical setting.
- Combination of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities.
- On‑call duties shared among transplant hepatology faculty.
