General Description

The Student Writing Tutor provides academic support services to students utilizing the Writing Center. Responsibilities include assisting students with writing assignments and coursework, and providing support to assist students with writing development.

Requirements
  • Must be a current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours for the fall or spring semesters or enrolled in a minimum of 3 hours for the summer.
  • Current OCCC Student with a Federal Work Study Award
  • AND Must have completed ENGL 1113 (English Composition I) and ENGL 1213 (English Composition II) with a final grade of B or above. Have completed ENGL 1113 with a final grade of B or above and enrolled in ENGL 1213.
  • OR Have successfully completed ENGL 1113 (English Composition I) and ENGL 1213 (English Composition II) and be recommended by an OCCC faculty member who can speak to the candidate’s qualifications for the position (letter of recommendation must be provided and must accompany a writing sample).
  • Have a cumulative or institutional GPA over 2.5
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Windows or similar software.
  • Demonstrates excellent writing skills and knowledge of the writing process.
  • Understands grammar rules and documentation styles such as MLA .
  • Excellent verbal communication.
  • Ability to work effectively online.
  • Proficient clerical skills such as answering phones and entering data.
  • Positive human relations skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and conflict resolution.
  • Understands the value of a peer leadership role.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions

1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Sedentary work:
The person in this position may occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES :
This position requires the person to frequently move about the center to assist students and perform the essential functions of the position. This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, and staff to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations. This position frequently requires the person to operate and inspect a computer and other Writing Center equipment to assist and/or instruct students on proper operation.

3. VISUAL ACUITY :
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.

4. WORKING CONDITIONS This position performs the essential functions in an indoor center, classroom, or office setting.
