Job Title:

Substitute Teacher

Reports to: School Principal / Assistant Principal

Classification: Temporary / On-Call

Job Summary

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a positive and productive learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The primary goal is to follow provided lesson plans, ensure student safety, and manage classroom behavior effectively so that learning continues without interruption.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Delivery: Execute lesson plans left by the absent teacher; explain concepts, facilitate discussions, and assist students with assignments.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a functional and orderly learning environment. Apply school disciplinary policies consistently and fairly.
  • Student Safety: Supervise students at all times, including during transitions, recess, or lunch as assigned.
  • Reporting: Provide the permanent teacher with a brief summary of the day, noting completed work, student behavior, and any incidents that occurred.
  • Professionalism: Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and school information.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED (many districts require a Bachelor's degree or some college credits).
  • Certification: Valid State Substitute Teaching Permit or Teaching License (where applicable).
  • Background Check: Successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
Essential Skills
  • Adaptability: The ability to thrive in different grade levels and subject areas.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and written skills for interacting with students and staff.
  • Patience: A calm demeanor when handling unexpected challenges or behavioral issues.
Daily Expectations
  • Arrival:
    Check in at the main office 15–20 minutes before the bell.
  • Preparation:
    Review the "Sub Folder", seating charts, and lesson materials.
  • Execution:
    Follow the schedule strictly (bells, lunch times, specials).
  • Wrap-up:
    Tidy the classroom and leave a detailed note for the teacher.
