POSITION SUMMARY:

The Library/Media Assistant is to provide support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for performing a variety of clerical library functions in an assigned school library. Organizing, distributing and sorting library and audio-visual materials; maintaining the library collections at school sites; identifying age-appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing library resources; and performing functions related to the collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials, textbooks, and a variety of electronic equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists individual students in locating reference materials and other instructional materials while keeping digital safety in mind.
  • Assists students in making proper use of center equipment and materials.
  • Keeps center materials and equipment in working order.
  • Operates the circulation desk and keeps complete circulation files.
  • Operates equipment and apparatus on request, either in the media center or elsewhere.
  • Reads to small groups of students and listens to individual students read.
  • Assumes responsibility for cataloging, filing, and continuous organization of learning materials.
  • Trains and supervises student media assistants.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining specific educational displays that reinforce important parts of the curriculum/instructional program.
  • Additional duties that may be assigned by immediate supervisor or above.

LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR

SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.
