The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a motivated, forward-thinking professional to join our team as an Assistant District Construction Engineer in District 1. In this dynamic role you will help oversee construction operations, ensure quality and safety standards, and contribute to the successful completion of highway and bridge projects across the district. Job Duties- Assist the District Construction Engineer in managing the construction program for the district.
- Review plans and specifications for constructability and accuracy and work with district divisions to make changes.
- Represent the Department at pre‑construction conferences, public hearings, and meetings.
- Conduct progress inspections of projects to ensure construction adheres to plans and specifications.
- Ensure environmental commitments are met during project construction.
- Keep the District informed of activities and problems within the assigned area.
- Handle inquiries and concerns from the public.
- Review change orders, estimates, and working day reports for content and accuracy.
- Supervise assigned Project Managers.
- Enforce District and Department policies and procedures.
- Complete performance reports and ensure efficient use of staff, materials, and equipment.
- Review consultant plans on Federal aid projects and assure applicable procedures, policies and design standards are met.
- Manage the hiring process, training, and employee development for the District’s Construction function, working with the Human Resources Division.
- Manage the drug testing process for District construction staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Professional Engineer II:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of professional‑level engineering experience. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects within 90 days of employment. - Professional Engineer I:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a P.E. license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects within 90 days of employment. - Engineer:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a similar field.
- Civil Engineering P.E. license.
- Field construction experience, particularly in transportation.
- Experience with public relations and media.
- Knowledge of environmental issues related to construction.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Progressive responsibility and experience in supervision and project management, including direction of multiple personnel and projects.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Knowledge of all aspects of construction operations during assigned projects, modern highway construction methods, maintenance, and materials operations, and related legal responsibilities.
- Ability to understand, interpret and implement state and federal laws, regulations, and agency standards.
- Ability to interpret engineering plans and specifications, plan, organize, assign, and direct work of employees, and interact effectively with employees, local government representatives, contractors, consultants, and the public.
- Capability to build coalitions and maintain positive working relationships across professions and personalities.

Compensation ranges for the Professional Engineer II position are $41.912 to $61.785 per hour, for Professional Engineer I $36.443 to $53.721 per hour, and for the Engineer level $31.968 to $47.125 per hour.
Pay rates are commensurate with education and experience and are subject to fiscal constraints.
