Substation Engineering Supervisor (PE)
The Engineering Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of a substation engineering department, providing both technical and organizational leadership. This role manages project budgets and schedules, ensures high-quality design deliverables, and serves as a primary liaison between internal teams and the customer. The Engineering Supervisor leads a team of engineers and leads, drives process efficiency, and supports business growth by executing current workflows and identifying opportunities for improvement in protection and control engineering projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and training in substation engineering, with a focus on protection and control systems, and deliver one-on-one mentorship and coaching to team leads.
- Establish, monitor, and maintain quality control standards for all design services and engineering products to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Monitor and manage project budgets and schedules using designated systems and procedures, ensuring that all projects and workflows remain on time and within budget.
- Develop and review conceptual project scopes, clearly communicate scope and expectations to multiple stakeholders, and prepare cost estimates for proposed projects.
- Hold teams accountable to project estimates, schedules, and customer deadlines, and ensure that change orders are issued in a timely and appropriate manner when project scope changes.
- Directly manage team leads and individual contributors within the department, providing guidance, feedback, and direction to support their performance and development.
- Collaborate with internal leads and customer representatives to drive and refine business processes, ensuring that workflow and workload distribution are efficient and effective.
- Prepare written technical performance reports and deliver periodic presentations to management and project teams regarding project status, budget performance, and key metrics.
- Engage with customers to understand their needs and expectations, and work with both the customer and internal teams to ensure that processes run smoothly and issues are addressed promptly.
- Distribute workflow from the customer to internal leads and oversee allocation of work to their teams, serving as the central point through which all projects are routed.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the customer on operational issues, including resolving problems and inefficiencies related to design, process, and communication.
- Resolve issues related to invoicing, resourcing, and staffing, ensuring that project teams are appropriately staffed and that billing is accurate and timely.
- Mediate and resolve disagreements between the customer and internal teams regarding processes, technical issues, and project execution, working toward mutually acceptable solutions.
- Proactively address personnel matters, including hiring, termination, promotions, demotions, attendance issues, scheduling, and performance reviews, in coordination with organizational policies.
- Drive training and development initiatives for the team through the leads, ensuring that staff maintain and enhance their technical and professional skills.
- Utilize Microsoft Office and customer-specific software and applications to manage schedules, budgets, documentation, reporting, and other project-related tasks.
- Supervise the work of the project team, providing day-to-day oversight, coaching, and support, and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
- Extensive technical expertise in protection and control engineering, including relay settings, one-line diagrams, fault studies, and fault analysis for electric utility systems.
- Experience in substation engineering, with hands-on experience engineering and managing electric substation protection and control systems projects.
- 10+ years of experience engineering and managing electric substation protection and control systems projects.
- 4+ years of experience leading or supervising a technical design or engineering team.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license, or the ability and willingness to obtain a PE license within an agreed timeframe.
- Demonstrated experience in engineering supervision and engineering management within utility or utility services environments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and customer-specific software and applications used for project management, documentation, and reporting.
- Proven ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and scope, including development of cost estimates and oversight of change orders.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage leads and individual contributors, provide mentorship, and drive team performance.
- Effective communication skills, including the ability to prepare written technical performance reports and present project status, budget, and performance to management and teams.
