Position SummaryWater4 exists to address the global water crisis by building market-based water utilities across Sub-Saharan Africa. This is not awareness work. It is long-term infrastructure, disciplined execution, and responsible capital deployed for lasting impact.
The Director of Finance serves as Water4’s senior financial steward, responsible for ensuring that the organization’s financial strategy, capital structure, and governance systems are aligned with its mission and growth trajectory. This is a key leadership position at Water4, partnering closely with the CEO and Board to guide decision-making, manage risk, and steward resources with integrity.
This is a role for a seasoned financial leader who understands how philanthropy, earned revenue, and debt work together, and who values clarity, judgment, and accountability.
Core Responsibilities- Lead financial planning, forecasting, and long-range modeling across a multi-entity organization
- Translate complex financial data into clear insights for executive and Board decision-making
- Ensure financial strategy supports sustainable growth and mission durability
- Design and steward Water4’s capital stack (grants, earned revenue, debt, PRI, reserves)
- Lead relationships with lenders, donors, and capital partners
- Evaluate financing options and recommend capital deployment strategies
- Serve as primary financial partner to the Board and Finance Committee
- Oversee organizational risk management, liquidity, and compliance posture
- Ensure financial policies and controls are appropriate for scale and complexity
- Provide strategic oversight of accounting operations and internal controls
- Partner with the Controller to ensure accurate reporting, clean audits, and strong discipline
- Review and approve financial statements and audit outcomes
- Own multi-year financial models and scenario planning
- Assess tradeoffs under uncertainty and guide leadership through decisions
- Ensure data integrity supports strategy, not just compliance
- Lead and develop the finance function through clear roles and accountability
- Oversee HR systems and compliance for U.S.
-based staff - Foster a culture of stewardship, discipline, and trust
Required
- CPA or equivalent senior financial experience
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership (Controller, Director of Finance, CFO, or equivalent)
- Experience in complex, multi-entity organizations
- Demonstrated judgment in capital allocation, risk management, and governance
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with hybrid funding models (philanthropy, debt, earned income)
- Board-level communication and financial presentation experience
- Experience in nonprofit, infrastructure, or mission-driven enterprises
- Advanced financial modeling and forecasting capability
