Position Title
Phlebotomist
- Inpatient
- Part Time ) – Department:
Pathology Lab
Under general supervision, performs advanced and complex phlebotomy procedures.
Responsibilities- Performs routine phlebotomy procedures, drawing blood samples and handling other samples, for laboratory analysis as ordered by attending physicians.
- Ensures proper identification and labeling of specimens in accordance with technical procedures and lab policies.
- Performs other duties such as administering glucose tolerance test and sweat chloride test.
- Registers patients, orders tests, verifies completeness of orders and billing information.
- Enters patient demographic data, insurance and billing information, and specific laboratory tests into the laboratory computer database.
- Prepares specimens for transport to the lab including pouring off urines and centrifugation of blood samples as appropriate.
- Ensures prompt delivery of samples to laboratory for analysis.
- Maintains accurate records, documents and files as required.
- Complies with all hospital and laboratory safety policies and procedures, including appropriate use of PPE.
- Completes annual competency assessment.
- Assumes responsibility for own professional development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of a phlebotomy training course, medical training course, or on‑the‑job training required. - Experience:
1–3 years of experience required. - License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s):
Current Basic Life Support from AHA (American Heart Association) certification required.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of a phlebotomy training course, medical training course, or on‑the‑job training required. - Experience:
3–5 years of experience required. - License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s):
Current Basic Life Support from AHA (American Heart Association) certification required. - Current phlebotomy certification required (must have issue date and expiration date on certificate):
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) – ASCP‑BOC
- Phlebotomy Certification (PC) – NHCO
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) – NPS
- Education:
High school diploma or GED required; completion of a phlebotomy training course, medical training course, or on‑the‑job training required. - Experience:
5 or more years of experience required. - License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s):
Current Basic Life Support from AHA (American Heart Association) certification required. - Current phlebotomy certification required (must have issue date and expiration date on certificate):
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) – ASCP‑BOC
- Phlebotomy Certification (PC) – NHCO
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) – NPS
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of phlebotomy policies, procedures, techniques and processing requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, performing all types of phlebotomy procedures.
- Follow policy regarding HIPAA and privacy of confidential information.
- Core level knowledge of normal laboratory testing processes and specimen requirements.
- Ability and skill to apply core level theory, practices and techniques to perform, post‑process, analyze and annotate data or procedure documentation.
- Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non‑clinical work assignments.
