Position Description

Oklahoma Appleseed is currently hiring a second staff attorney to assist in implementation of the Oklahoma Survivor Act (OSA) with 0-5 years of experience to work under the Legal Director. The staff attorney serves a key role in the OK Appleseed legal team by assisting the organization in direct representation, technical assistance to other attorneys and organizations, pro bono management, and case management for OSA Implementation.

The staff attorney will have excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. They must also be adept at problem‑solving and decision making with the utmost integrity. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively manage partnerships and clients. The staff attorney will report directly to the Legal Director and work in close collaboration with the present criminal justice staff attorney and paralegal and the entire legal department staff.

This is a full time, exempt position.

Duties Will Include:
  • To directly represent clients in retroactive relief under the Oklahoma Survivor Act (OSA)
  • To draft pleadings, letters, memorandum of law, briefings.
  • To collaborate with non‑legal department staff to further the mission and objectives of OK Appleseed
  • To effectively manage pro bono partnerships to create resource guides, assist in representation, and develop CLE trainings
  • To define and track data related to OSA implementation
  • Any other relevant project work that position has capacity and expertise for that is needed to further the mission of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement new legal concepts
  • Experience coordinating pro bono or community partnerships

  • Flexibility and ability to adapt and learn new areas of law quickly
  • Knowledge of Oklahoma’s legal and policy landscape
  • Willingness to push individual knowledge boundaries and specific focus areas and work through the discomfort of not knowing everything all at once.
Position Details

This position will report to the Legal Director. Some In‑state/out‑of‑state travel is expected. The salary for this position is $65, plus benefits per year, commensurate with experience.

This position is expected to become an expert on Oklahoma Survivors’ Act and assist the Legal Director and organization with implementation.
