The Neurology/Neurosurgery Care Unit (NNCU) in Tower B, 2 East, University of Oklahoma Medical Center is now admitting patients. The unit offers significant room upgrades and cares for a mix of medical/surgical and step‑down patients. It provides elevated care to OU Health’s most complex patients, encourages team‑based care, and offers easier access to services.
Our unit focuses on neurology. The patient population includes diagnoses of stroke, seizure, brain mass, and neck and spinal surgery. It specializes in 24‑7 epilepsy monitoring, with close observation for seizure activity. Nurses will perform Yale swallow screenings and become NIHSS certified (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification).

General DescriptionAs an OU Health Registered Nurse (RN) I, you will work under general supervision, providing high‑quality care to patients with a range of health problems. You will model the OU Health Way, living our core values:

RN I represents a nurse who is a novice or an advanced beginner progressing to competence. The nurse relies on rules rather than independent principles, and may begin to formulate principles with experience.
Essential Responsibilities- Align behaviors with OU Health values and maintain nursing professional practice standards.
- Assume responsibility for an assigned patient or group of patients.
- Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments, noting all changes in physician orders.
- Assist physician in patient examinations and minor diagnostic procedures and treatments.
- Obtain and monitor physiological data, observe manifestations, and intervene as necessary.
- Administer medication as prescribed.
- Initiate, regulate, and monitor intravenous infusions and blood products.
- Deliver patient care safely and competently.
- Resolve patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
- Inform patient and family of hospital procedures and share the care plan during care and at discharge.
- Make referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
- Seek mentorship, remain open to coaching and feedback, and maintain professional certification(s) and licensure to develop and uphold necessary skills.
- Develop a professional career plan and set performance goals in alignment with enterprise‑wide metrics, measuring progress with department leadership.
- Foster an inclusive workforce where individual differences are valued and maximized to achieve OU Health’s goals.
- Delegate tasks to clinical support staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Experience: 0‑3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Current Registered Nurse License from the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or a multistate compact RN (eNLC).
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Experience: 3‑5 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
License/Certification/Registration:
- Current Registered Nurse License from the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing or a multistate compact RN (eNLC).
- Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
Education:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
