The Adult Surgical Specialty Unit is a 30-bed unit at OU Health. We treat a wide variety of patients with varying levels of acuity, both in med/surg and step-down status. We specialize in post-surgical patients in ENT, ORL, bariatrics, plastics, emergency general surgery, general surgery, gynecology, urology, and colorectal service lines as well as many other disease processes. Surgical Specialty offers an opportunity to care for patients in varying levels of acuity that receive innovative surgical care.

RN I represents a nurse who is a novice or an advanced beginner advancing to competent. While advancing from novice to competent, the nurse relies on rules rather than principles which are independent of specific situations. The advanced beginner may have enough real experience to begin to formulate principles.

• Align behaviors with OU Health values and maintain nursing professional practice standards.
• Assume responsibility for an assigned patient or group of patients.
• Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments, noting changes in physician orders on assigned patients.
• Assist physician in examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment.
• Obtain and monitor physiological data of patients, observe physiological manifestations, and intervene when necessary.
• Administer medication as prescribed.
• Initiate, regulate and monitor intravenous infusions and blood products.
• Deliver patient care safely and competently.
• Resolve patient complaints in a timely manner in accordance with policy and in collaboration with support staff.
• Inform patient and family of hospital procedures and share care plan during care and at discharge.
• Make referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.
• Foster a growth mindset through seeking mentorship, remaining open to coaching and feedback, and maintaining professional certification(s)/licensure.
• Develop a professional career plan and establish personal performance goals aligned with enterprise metrics, measuring progress with department leadership.
• Foster an inclusive workforce where individual differences are valued and maximized.
• Delegate tasks to clinical support staff as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience:

0-3 years of patient care as a Registered Nurse. License/Certification/Registration:
Current Registered Nurse License (RN) issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC);
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.

Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience:

3-5 years of patient care as a Registered Nurse. License/Certification/Registration:
Current Registered Nurse License (RN) issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC);
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire;
Specialty certification(s) preferred.

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required;
Master's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Experience:

5+ years of patient care as a Registered Nurse. License/Certification/Registration:
Current Registered Nurse License (RN) issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC);
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire;
Specialty certification(s) preferred.
