Overall Responsibility
To establish guidelines for the nursing assistant as part of the nursing team, assist and provide quality of care to patients, and offer supportive nursing care to meet individual patients’ needs.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities- Perform technical skills incorporating the patient’s plan of care and provide comfort measures.
- Assist with admissions, transfers within the facility, and discharge.
- Assist patients with requests from other services, such as dietary.
- Assist patients with activities and care as directed by the department manager.
- Assist patients to the bathroom.
- Prepare and chaperone patients during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Assist with patient procedures and treatments as needed.
- Apply hot and cold compress treatments.
- Assist patients to cars via wheelchair.
- Provide a clean and safe environment.
- Ensure proper aseptic technique and infection control measures are followed.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Observe and follow policies and procedures set forth by the facility.
- Transport requisitions or specimens to the appropriate department.
- Assist personal care such as baths, weighing, and linen/bed changes.
- Recognize patient care priorities and communicate patient needs to appropriate staff.
- Assist in ordering supplies, checking outdates, and verifying changes or charges per department manager.
- Record vital signs on admission and as required.
- Orient new staff nursing assistants to the unit.
- Train new staff in nursing assistant skills:
- Vital signs
- Urine pregnancy test
- Charting of all patient information
- Informing nurse of any abnormal patient information
- Training on EKG machine, set‑up and use
- Cleaning and making beds
- Transporting patients within the facility and to cars upon discharge
- Copying all forms (orders, nurses’ notes, med sheets, etc.)
- Emptying sharps containers
- Stocking supply room and patient rooms
- Responsible for daily cleaning assignments.
- Maintain good communication with all staff members.
- Write out surgery consents.
- Escort patient to outpatient and verify by name and date of birth.
- Set up tray for nurse (allergy band, HCS test, Glucometer, etc.).
- Took care of flow of patients, runs board.
- Call patients in early.
- Call for CXR, EKG, or lab if not in packet.
- Set up IV packets for next day surgery.
- Answer call lights.
- Offer fluid and snacks to post‑op patients.
Licensure and Certification: BCLS certification; if not current, certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
Required ExperienceHigh school certificate or equivalency.
Preferred ExperiencePrevious experience as a nursing assistant.
Environmental andPhysical Requirements
The position requires working in a temperature‑controlled environment, reading and speaking English fluently, basic math, reading, computer, and communication skills. Physical demands include reaching, kneeling, stooping, and moving objects up to 50 lb occasionally, exposure to blood and body fluids, and infectious diseases. Reasonable accommodations may be provided.
