Responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious, appealing, and well-balanced meals for campers, staff, and guests during overnight camp sessions and events. This position ensures that meals are delivered on time and in compliance with health and safety standards, contributing to a positive camp experience by fostering a welcoming dining environment. The Camp Cook also manages food inventory, coordinates with vendors, and maintains a clean, organized, and compliant kitchen.

This role is vital in supporting the camp’s mission of providing a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where participants can thrive.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Meal Preparation and Service
  • Plan, prepare, and serve nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks for campers, staff, and guests, accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences (e.g., allergies, vegetarian, gluten-free).
  • Ensure timely meal service in alignment with the camp's schedule.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and food handling standards.
  • Manage and store food and supplies properly to prevent spoilage and contamination.
Menu Planning and Inventory Control
  • Help develop menus that meet dietary needs, nutritional requirements, and budgetary constraints, with approval from camp administration.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order food and supplies as needed, coordinating with vendors to ensure timely deliveries.
Safety and Compliance
  • Enforce food safety protocols, including proper sanitation practices, safe food preparation, and temperature control.
  • Adhere to all state and local health department regulations.
Collaboration and Teamwork
  • Work closely with camp leadership and staff to support camp activities, meal schedules, and special events.
  • Supervise and mentor kitchen assistants or volunteers, ensuring they follow food safety and preparation standards.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
    Culinary experience and/or Serve Safe preferred.
  • Previous kitchen experience, preferably in a camp, school, or nonprofit setting.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Flexibility.
  • Strong organizational skills:
    Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and maintain a high level of detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills:
    Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff, campers, and families, both verbally and in writing.
  • Technology proficiency:
    Comfortable using office software (e.g., Microsoft Office), camp management systems, and other digital tools.
  • Problem-solving skills:
    Ability to handle issues as they arise and seek solutions efficiently.
  • Attention to detail:
    Ability to maintain accurate records, files, and inventory, with a focus on precision and consistency.
  • Time management:
    Strong ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Physical ability to administer first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Physical ability to travel over uneven surfaces in extreme summer temperatures for 15 hours a day.
  • Physical ability to carry and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven surfaces.
  • Physical ability to reach, stoop, climb, kneel, and move freely in locations as outdoor camping sites and storage areas.
  • Ability to meet affiliate employment requirements, including acceptable outcomes to background check and reference checks.
  • (If utilizing personal vehicle for camp business) Provide personal auto insurance verification.
  • (If needed to drive affiliate vehicle) Acceptance by affiliate auto insurance.
