Captain (Regular, Full Time)
Position within the Department of Corrections, Oklahoma State Reformatory. The Captain oversees the operational security of an adult correctional facility and coordinates, supervises, and directs a correctional security program.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinates and supervises correctional security functions and activities at the facility, serving as shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a medium or maximum security facility or as the chief of security in a minimum security facility.
- Acts as commander of a correctional emergency response team, schedules training exercises, and coordinates activities.
- Conducts special investigations concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts.
- Coordinates and supervises security, riot, and escape procedures, including inmate counts, searches for escape materials, and contraband investigations.
- Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents.
- Conducts inspections of assigned staff at the beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure proper maintenance; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift.
- Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances.
- Responsible for SMU and/or restricted housing, depending on facility security level.
- Serves as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations.
- Provides leadership to subordinate correctional officers and security managers, serving as a positive role model.
- Completes performance reviews for subordinates, administers progressive discipline, monitors and approves officers' time, and clears exceptions.
- Enforces institutional rules and regulations; maintains security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing, and/or walking.
- May assume operation and management of the facility after normal business hours or in the absence of the chief of security.
Knowledge of supervisory methods, staffing patterns and scheduling, disciplinary techniques for inmates under restraint, inmate behavior psychology, firearm use and care, proper restraint methods, English usage fundamentals, basic math, and report writing. Ability to establish effective working relationships, follow oral and written instructions, gather and organize facts into clear reports, evaluate situations quickly, act decisively in emergencies, communicate security techniques, maintain firearm proficiency, and manage conflict resolution within the inmate population.
Education and ExperienceFour (4) years of experience in correctional officer or security work for a government or private corrections agency, and meeting the statutory requirements of Title 57, O.S. Section 510: minimum age of twenty (20) years, thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma or GED and completion of an approved Department training course within the first six (6) months of employment.
Special Requirements- Be of good moral character.
- Complete satisfactory training for correctional officers and guards as prescribed by the State Board of Corrections before duty alone.
- Pass a physical in keeping with job conditions annually per Department guidelines.
- Hold a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
- Pass drug testing.
- Be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week.
- May be designated as a peace officer; must meet training and screening requirements of the Department and Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
- Disqualifications: guilty, nolo contendere, or convicted of offenses requiring registration under the Sex Offenders Registration Act; convictions of moral turpitude without pardon; nonviolent felonies or any felony without pardon; certain misdemeanor domestic violence convictions without pardons, expungements, or court orders; dishonorable discharge from armed services.
