Duties

Operates one or more types of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles typically having a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 32,000 pounds. Drives over public roads (or equivalent) in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds to transport cargo. Also operates forklifts to facilitate cargo loading/unloading. Physical effort is moderate to heavy. Drives tractor trailers and/or other vehicles typically having a GVW of more than 32,000 pounds.

Operates vehicles to transport supplies, materials, equipment and/or tools. May drive over rough, uneven terrain or unimproved roads, interstates, steep and winding grades etc. exercising caution when backing to load/unload at docks, ramps or similar locations. Couples/uncouples tractors and trailers and connects/disconnects air brakes and electrical lines. Determines manner and sequence of loading to achieve balance and protection for fragile items.

Checks load in transit on longer hauls. May load/unload vehicles by hand with or without assistance. May operate power take-off equipment such as hydraulic dumps or lifts. Reads maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Operates one or more electric, LPG, or diesel-powered forklift trucks to facilitate loading and unloading duties. May be required to transport bulky and unwieldy items.

Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Maintains records and documents actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Checks material transported against invoices, verifies status of cargo, and obtains signature of receiving personnel. Uses two-way radio or other device to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations.

Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
