Qualifications
  • “B” C.D.L. with passenger endorsements and bus driver certificate
  • High School, GED or equivalent experience required
  • Experience with children preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years old and able to obtain certificate
Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
  • Basic communication skills (oral, written, business) to exchange information, give/receive instructions, respond to inquiries, and fill out forms
  • Data recording and record keeping – simple logging, filing, and posting entries
  • Reading and interpreting routine written or printed materials such as safety policies, diagrams, maps, schedules, or instructional material
  • Acceptable motor vehicle driving record and ability to pass required tests; familiarity with safety regulations

Successful performance requires people skills to handle difficult situations, control unruly passengers, and resolve conflicts with parents. Follow safety guidelines and policies, meet school dress standards, be on time, dependable, and handle district requirements. Effective problem‑solving skills are essential to prevent and resolve issues, and a positive attitude toward staff, students, and the public supports educational goals.

Essential Job Functions
  • Drive bus to and from school and other locations following predetermined routes and schedules; may alter routes for emergency weather or road conditions. Allow only authorized riders and pick up/discharge at authorized stops.
  • Maintain proper discipline on the bus and ensure bus rules are followed to keep driver and passengers safe; report rule violations to principals or appropriate authority.
  • Maintain bus cleanliness and encourage students to follow bus rules regarding food, litter, etc.
  • Complete a bus inspection report before each operation; check fuel, oil, coolant, and other operating fluid levels. Notify supervisor of routine preventive servicing.
  • Immediately report any equipment or mechanical problems to supervisor; notify appropriate authority of accidents and delays.
  • Ensure each student receives a copy of the bus rider rules; explain rules, regulations, and safety precautions each year and practice bus evacuations during the first two weeks of each semester. Attend required bus driver in‑service meetings.
  • Assist with field/activity trips when schedules allow and follow established procedures for such trips.
  • Know and comply with school bus regulations as listed in the State Board of Education manual; practice safe driving at all times; obey all traffic laws and observe all safety regulations.
  • Perform related bus driving duties as assigned.
Supervision

No direct supervision; may be assigned a bus monitor or assistant. Driver has overall authority for bus operations.

Physical/Mental Requirements

Must pass an annual physical. In a normal workday, sit 2–3 hours, stand/walk 2 hours, perform occasional bending, stooping, squatting/crouching, climbing steps, pushing/pulling, and sometimes assist disabled children or students. May need to lift disabled children, wheelchairs, or restraints.

Operate foot controls with both feet; use both hands for repetitive actions requiring grasp; have adequate manual dexterity to operate bus safely. Visual, hearing, and speaking abilities must suffice to read signs, hear radios and external noises, and give instructions.

Operate bus under stressful situations, handle confrontation, work indoors/outdoors with temperature changes, drive motorized equipment, and be aware of exposure to toxic gases, dust, or fumes. Must be a defensive driver and exercise caution at intersections, railroad crossings, and other assembly areas.
